Bitcoin trading dipped to the $76,300 range on Thursday following confirmation from Binance regarding a significant security breach. The exchange estimates the total impact of the incident at approximately $6.3 billion, a figure that would rank it among the largest cryptocurrency thefts in history. Prior to this selloff, Bitcoin had reached a 24-hour high of $81,890 before millions of leveraged long positions were liquidated.
In an official statement on X, Binance indicated that initial investigations point to a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer as the entry point for the attacker. The individual reportedly accessed a service container and executed unauthorized withdrawal transactions. However, the exchange emphasized that there is no evidence of a private key leak from user wallets. Binance has since revoked authorization for the affected address and is collaborating with law enforcement to identify those responsible.
The financial impact estimate of $6.3 billion represents an increase from earlier reports, which ranged between $2.7 billion and $5.8 billion. In response to the breach, Binance worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, successfully securing approximately $3 billion on-chain so far. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that his company froze over 1.567 billion USDT, while Circle also halted USDC transactions linked to the suspected attacker. Additionally, Aave reportedly suspended lending markets to prevent the attacker from borrowing against the stolen funds.
Binance has assured users that their funds remain safe and that all losses will be covered by the exchange's SAFU fund and company reserves. Co-founder Yi He reiterated this commitment on X, while former CEO Changpeng Zhao noted that although he no longer manages Binance.com, he expects user funds to be fully covered as a shareholder. Consequently, deposits and withdrawals have been suspended while security checks are conducted. The exchange plans to publish an updated Proof of Reserves and a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and remediation is finalized. Binance.US stated that its platform remains unaffected by the incident.
