Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has proposed December 2028 as the target for completing Ethereum’s post-quantum and post-AI transition, one year ahead of the deadline in the foundation’s existing roadmap. He described the date as a hope, not a formally adopted change to that roadmap.

Speaking at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on Tuesday, Drake said developers have 24 months to deliver three more network upgrades. The foundation’s roadmap, published in September, sets December 2029 as the deadline for quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers. It is due to be reassessed in January 2027.

Drake had outlined plans in August for production-ready leanVM technology in 2027, followed by post-quantum deployments across Ethereum’s three layers in 2028.

The schedule has drawn scrutiny from other blockchain developers. In October, Starknet’s community backed research into becoming an independent post-quantum layer-1 network. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson previously described Ethereum’s 2029 target as “too late” and warned that deadlines could slip.
