Swan Bitcoin founder Cory Klippsten says artificial intelligence poses a more immediate security threat to Bitcoin than quantum computing. In an interview on Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction, he warned that hackers are using large language models to probe systems for vulnerabilities.

Klippsten characterized quantum-computing concerns as largely speculative in the near term. He estimated that computers capable of threatening Bitcoin’s cryptography are at least a decade away, and said the network could adopt quantum-resistant protections if the risk became credible. Implementing them prematurely, he argued, could add unnecessary complexity.

His comments come amid reports of security incidents at cryptocurrency exchanges. Brazil’s Mercado Bitcoin suspended deposits and withdrawals on Monday after an incident, with researchers estimating that more than $46 million had left its wallets. The article also reported that Binance lost $6.3 billion in an October 29 hack that the FBI attributed to North Korean hackers.

Klippsten cautioned that crypto companies should not rely on hastily developed software to protect customer assets, emphasizing the need for sound security expertise. He also said some startups and investors had used quantum-computing fears to attract funding, describing much of the discussion as fear, uncertainty and doubt rather than evidence of an imminent threat.
